Virtual Tape Solutions With Data De-duplication
The Problem:
Backup data is inherently similar from one backup to the next. While conventional compression can reduce backup storage requirements by 1.5-3x, depending on the “compressibility” of the data, it does nothing to eliminate redundancy between backups. Incremental or differential backup approaches attempt to address this, but at the cost of increased restore times. And neither addresses the issue of backing up large databases with only small % of changes between backups. So today’s backup solutions, whether physical or virtual tape-based, are very inefficient in their use of storage.
The Solution:
ETI-NET has partnered with Data Domain, the pre-eminent supplier of data de-duplication products to bring these products to NonStop backups via its BackBox™ virtual tape product. With data de-duplication, effectively only the data changed since previous backups is stored for any given backup. Effective “compression” factors of 20-30x can be achieved for most data. Not only is storage efficiency drastically improved, but restore times can be decreased by eliminating the need for incremental backups.
Is there a catch?
No catch. Data de-duplication is a field-proven technology – one of the hottest technologies in today. And the Data Domain solution runs at channel speed, achieving de-duplication in real-time, so there is no slow-down. Most importantly, the Data Domain equipment incorporates multiple levels of redundancy and integrity checking, to ensure reliable retrieval of backups.
BackBox™ - NonStop Virtual Tape with Data De-Duplication
Data de-duplication equipment can be used as the virtual tape storage “back-end” for BackBox Virtual Tape Controllers (VTCs), providing effective storage capacities scaling from several Terabytes up to over 10 Petabytes. This can also be used as a cost effective base for implementing inter-site disaster recovery configurations transparent to the NonStop systems.
