Virtual Tape Solutions With Enterprise Storage Integration

The Problem:
Many organizations are centralizing their storage, particularly of backup data. The most common solutions are based on an Enterprise Storage Manager (ESM), such as Tivoli Storage Manager, Legato NetWorker, Veritas NetBackup or HP Data Protector. But none of these products offer “agents” native to the NonStop platform to feed data to and from the ESM servers.

The Solution:
ETI-NET’s BackBox virtual tape product enables integration of NonStop backup and archive data into these environments. Backups and TMF dumps continue as before, transparently via BackBox’s virtual tape interface to the NonStop systems. For TSM and NetWorker BackBox can operate in “Conduit-mode”, passing backup data directly to the respective server without any intermediate storage. For NetBackup and Data Protector, the backup data is staged on VTC storage before being forwarded to the respective server automatically by scripted agents.

Is there a catch?
No catch. ETI-NET’s experience with ESM integration of NonStop backups dates back over 15 years, with its BackHome and BCOM products. BackBox embodies the latest evolution of this technology, including customized use of ESM APIs to implement “Conduit-mode” – an ETI-NET exclusive.

BackBox™ - NonStop Virtual Tape for Enterprise Storage Integration

Enterprise storage manager (ESM) products can be used as the virtual tape storage “back-end” for BackBox Virtual Tape Controllers (VTCs), providing integration of NonStop backup data into standardized corporate backup storage systems.

Features:

  • Highly efficient “conduit-mode” available for direct pass-through to TSM & Legato NetWorker
  • Scripted store-and-forward available to almost any ESM product, including Veritas NetBackup and HP Data Protector
  • LAN or LAN-free data transfer for maximum throughput
  • NonStop host connections scalable to your capacity and throughput needs
  • Use multiple context-free BackBox VTCs for high availability – no single point of failure
  • SCSI connections to S-Series, or FC connection to NS-series
  • Multiple virtual tape drives on each host connection at no additional cost
  • Shipped pre-configured on HP Proliant servers, or implement on your servers

Benefits:

  • Transparent operation with NonStop backup & TMF software
  • Improved backup performance and rapid restores
  • Reduced operational overhead with virtual tape
  • Much higher reliability backups – eliminate tape media errors
  • Can use HP server equipment for reliability and field service by HP
