Robust, Highly Scalable Virtual Tape

The Problem:
While there are several virtual-tape based products available for NonStop systems, their scalability and robustness should be considered in planning a backup solution for the long term. An equipment failure that prevents timely retrieval of a backup may result in significant cost, so a virtual tape solution should have no single points of failure. Similarly, the ability to smoothly grow capacity and throughput for a virtual tape subsystem requires a product with no bottlenecks.

The Solution:
ETI-NET’s BackBox virtual tape product uses Virtual Tape Controllers (VTCs) that are context-free, with all of their control and configuration information stored on the NonStop host system, under the protection of TMF. Each VTC can have multiple FC or SCSI connections to NonStop hosts, and multiple VTCs can be used for throughput capacity and fault tolerance. Failure of a VTC or its connections simply results in automatic, transparent shifting of backup traffic to remaining paths.

Is there a catch?
No catch. BackBox’s NonStop-centric control and management approach enables linear expansion of throughput by growing the equipment configuration, and transparently routes backup data around failures.

BackBox™ - The Highly Scalable & Reliable Virtual Tape for NonStop

Enterprise storage manager (ESM) products can be used as the virtual tape storage “back-end” for BackBox Virtual Tape Controllers (VTCs), providing integration of NonStop backup data into standardized corporate backup storage systems.

Features:

  • Virtual tape storage on SAN, NAS, data de-duplication equipment, or an Enterprise Storage Manager
  • Multiple NonStop host connections scalable to your throughput needs
  • SCSI connections to S-Series, or FC connection to NS-series
  • Multiple virtual tape drives on each host connection at no additional cost
  • Multiple context-free BackBox VTCs for high availability – no single point of failure
  • Cluster configurations available for fully automated SAN storage path failure recovery
  • Shipped pre-configured on HP Proliant servers, or implement on your servers

Benefits:

  • Transparent operation with NonStop backup & TMF software
  • Improved backup performance and rapid restores
  • Grow throughput over time by simply adding host connections and VTCs
  • Eliminate loss of access to backups based on automatic re-routing via available VTCs & ports
  • Reduced operational overhead with virtual tape
  • Much higher reliability backups – eliminate tape media errors
  • Can use HP server equipment for reliability and field service by HP
